The Paris Opera and its upcoming productions
The Opéra National de Paris, as it is properly called, was founded in 1669 at the behest of Louis XIV, the Sun King. Today it is the primary opera company in France, with an international reputation for excellence. There are two venues that are home to the company. The oldest, dating back to the mid 19th century, is the Opéra Garnier, possibly the most famous opera house in the world and the setting for Gaston Leroux‘s novel, The Phantom Of The Opera. Here ballets and some classical operas are performed. The Opéra Bastille is a modern building, constructed in the late 1980s, which presents chiefly operas, including some modern works.
On the schedule for the new season are eagerly anticipated new productions of Puccini’s Tosca and La Boheme and Rossini’s masterpiece of music and comedy, The Barber Of Seville. Mozart’s singspiel opera The Abduction From The Seraglio and Humperdinck’s folk music themed Hansel and Gretel will also feature. Each year 800,000 people are enthralled by the magic of the Paris Opera. This is your chance to see why this company is so universally acclaimed.
