Roland Garros tennis tournament in 2014, a clash of titans

One of the world’s four major tennis tournaments, the French Open is the only one to be played on clay courts. Due to its tendency to slow down balls and bounce them high, clay makes for a more physically demanding surface than those found on hard or grass courts. Clay helps to lessen the advantage held by big serving players, thereby favouring longer rallies for the players and greater drama for the spectators. Consequently this tournament can be viewed as the most strenuous of the majors, especially when you take into consideration the fact that the final set of the men’s singles matches are played without a tie break. In 2014 the stage is set for a show of breathtaking sporting endurance.

Last year Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams each won in breathtaking style. For Rafa it was his eighth French Open win out of nine attempts, an astonishing record by any standard. This year, who knows? But you can be a witness to the excitement and find out.

While visiting the stadium you can also visit the French Tennis Federation Museum, with its permanent and temporary exhibitions, bilingual multimedia centre and film archives dating back to 1897. You can enjoy fine dining at Le Roland Garros restaurant and perhaps take a guided tour behind the scenes at the stadium.
