The Sleeping Beauty ballet in Paris 2013 a masterpiece not to be missed

Following on from his Swan Lake, the composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky received a commission from St. Petersburg’s Director of the Imperial Theatres, Ivan Vsevlozhsky. He was to compose the music for a ballet from Vsevlozhsky’s own scenario, based on Charles Perrault‘s interpretation of the classic folktale, Sleeping Beauty. The choreography would be by the French-Russian Master of the Imperial Ballet, Marius Petipa.

The work was first performed on January 15th 1890 at the Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg to surprisingly restrained acclaim. Sadly, the composer did not live to see his masterpiece attain worldwide popularity as he died in 1893. It wasn’t until the 1920s that The Sleeping Beauty became hugely well regarded. It is a prodigious piece of work, consisting of a prologue and three acts which lasts for nearly four hours, including intermissions. Yet throughout the audience is swept up in the story, the grandeur of the music and the brilliance of the dancing. The much loved ballet now has a permanent place in the classical repertoire. This winter you can see just why it has earned such an immense reputation when it is staged in the Opera Bastille, with its magnificent surroundings.
