The "classics" of Bastille Day
A key feature of Bastille Day in Paris is, of course, the military parade on the Champs-Élysées. It brings to mind vivid images of the Patrouille de France aerobatics team buzzing the Arc de Triomphe, the gleaming splendour of the Republican Guard and the dazzling white of the ceremonial uniform of the legionnaires. The parade goes from the Place de l'Etoile to the Place de la Concorde, passing along the tree shaded Champs-Élysées, so you are sure to find a suitable vantage point from which to enjoy the spectacle and experience the public fervour. Later, as evening begins, you can head to the Champs-de-Mars to attend the great traditional Bastille Day concert. Great classical compositions mingle with more popular refrains played by the symphony orchestra in a friendly and good-natured atmosphere. This rousing performance will put you in the mood for nightfall and the climax of the show: the magnificent fireworks display around the Eiffel Tower. It’s an awe-inspiring sight to enjoy from, for example, the terraces of the Trocadéro.
Dancing on Bastille Day
The Fête Nationale would not be the same without the occasion’s traditional popular balls. Head to the firefighters’ barracks of Paris, starting on the evening of July 13th to dance and swing, with family or friends, at the Firefighters' Ball. The Sévigné barracks awaits you about a ten-minute walk from the Hotel Marais Bastille. On the evening of the 14th, you’ll have a choice between the Montmartre barracks and those of Port Royal, a little further away but just as welcoming. In addition to enjoying a gourmet dinner, you can watch the magnificent fireworks display from the vantage point of the Seine. A must!
